Fire completes the work, leaving its own mark on clay and glaze. This introductory class dives into the fundamentals of Cone 6 soda firing, exploring the materials and atmospheric conditions that define the process. Students will work with specific clay bodies, slips, and glazes, learning how reduction, oxidation, and soda application interact to create complex surfaces and textures.
This course is both technical and exploratory—students will learn the chemistry and mechanics of soda firing while also experimenting with form, surface, and firing placement. If you’re looking to understand the unpredictability and beauty of atmospheric effects, this class offers a structured way to explore the possibilities of the kiln. Enrollment is limited to allow for hands-on experience and discussion. Contact me to secure your spot.
